Brief workshop at our studio

To begin our Final Major Project (FMP) journey we had a small workshop in class. Lizzie distributed a set of paper with a few prompts and questions that we had to answer. The first part of the workshop was to map out our ideas and topic into three categories - Subject, Theoretical context, Field/Media.

Subject - Here's what I put down for this -

  • Languages - Specifically South Asian.

  • Evolution of scripts - tracing the history in India.

  • Alphabets, characters of the Devanagiri script.

  • Lost languages along the way.

  • Compatibility and versatility of the Devanagiri script with modern technologies.

  • Words and genders in language.

  • European languages and their evolution, connection with sanskrit or indic languages?

  • Stereotypes associated with the South Asian languages.

Theoretical context I am looking into -

  • Ontology - seeing the same thing in multiple ways.

  • Green theory - Spell of the sensuous? David Abrams nature and language theory.

  • Semiotics

  • Typography

  • User experience

As for Field/Media, I don't have anything thought out yet at the moment.

For the next part of our workshop we got into groups of 3/4 and talked about our topics with the other person and the third person took notes. This was followed by a brief Q/A with the group members. The idea was to talk about what our various starting points are and have different views on the table.

I had a few questions by my group members -

  • Can you get in touch with any experts to understand the pictorial representation of words?

  • Where does the idea or inspiration come from? Is there a why to this?

The second half of the day was about two talks by ex-students of Falmouth University - Katharina Holland and Seb Summers. Both of them walked us through their FMP's and talked about their design process and how they reached the final outcome. I was really inspired by Katharina's work and her work strategy. Her exploration stage was interesting to look at. One of the things that she mentioned really stuck with me, it was how she went back to her Abstract after a few weeks to see where her research and exploration is taking her. I really found this interesting and noted it in my diary.

This is where we ended the day and tomorrow we have tutorials with Bryan and Lizzie to discuss our FMP directions.
